    Where to stay in Marbella

The single biggest decision when booking Marbella is which neighborhood — and most international booking sites get this completely wrong. They lump everything from Estepona to Calahonda under "Marbella" and sort by price, which tells you nothing about whether you'll be wheeling a suitcase down a cobblestone alley at midnight or staring at a six-lane motorway from your balcony.

Marbella is not one place. It's seven distinct zones, each with its own crowd, price range, walkability, and beach proximity. We live here; this is the guide we give friends who ask "but where should I actually book?".

    The seven neighborhoods

    Casco Antiguo (Old Town)

    Walkable

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, walkable charm

The whitewashed historic centre, completely pedestrianised, with Plaza de los Naranjos at its heart. Tapas bars, boutiques, and small-scale hotels in restored townhouses. The beach is a 10-minute walk south. No cars, which means quiet — but also no door-to-door pickup. Pack light.

    Price range: €100–€280 / night (3–4 star)

    Golden Mile

    Car or taxi

Best for: Luxury seekers, beach + spa, special occasions

The four-kilometre stretch between Marbella centre and Puerto Banús, fronting the best beaches in the city. Home to Marbella Club, Puente Romano, and a handful of five-stars. Wide pavements but no walkable village feel — you taxi or walk along the beach to reach restaurants. This is where most of the Conde Nast Marbella press coverage actually happens.

    Price range: €250–€2000+ / night (5 star + ultra-luxury)

    Puerto Banús

    Walkable

Best for: Nightlife, yacht-watching, party crowds

The marina built in 1970 as a private project for the Marbella jet-set, now a 1.5km strip of yacht moorings, designer flagships, and high-volume restaurants. The crowd peaks Thursday through Saturday in July–August. Walkable inside the harbour but heavy traffic on the perimeter. The beach (Playa Nikki) starts immediately east; western beaches are quieter.

    Price range: €180–€600 / night (4–5 star)

    Nueva Andalucía

    Car or taxi

Best for: Golf, families, longer stays, residential feel

The 'Valley of Golf' inland from Puerto Banús, with four courses (Las Brisas, Aloha, Los Naranjos, Magna) and the Saturday street market locals actually shop at. Mostly residential complexes with private pools — rent an apartment for a week with the family. You'll need a car. The beach is 5 minutes by car but not walkable.

Price range: €80–€350 / night (apartments + 3–4 star resorts)

    San Pedro de Alcántara

    Walkable

Best for: Budget travelers, slower pace, real local life

Marbella's working-town neighbor 6 km west, with a walkable centre, weekly Thursday market, and a long paseo marítimo. Half the price of central Marbella for similar quality. The crowd is more Spanish than international. Hourly bus to Marbella centre (Line 1, €1.30). Best for travelers who want to actually walk into a bar where nobody speaks English.

    Price range: €60–€180 / night

    Las Chapas & Cabopino

    Car or taxi

Best for: Family beach holidays, all-inclusive resorts, peace

The eastern arc, 15 km from central Marbella towards Mijas. Bigger beach resorts (Don Carlos, Vincci Estrella del Mar), the Artola dunes nature reserve, and the harbor at Cabopino. Quiet at night — restaurants close earlier than central Marbella. Best for families who want pool + beach + breakfast buffet and don't need nightlife. Car essential for going anywhere else.

Price range: €120–€450 / night (3–5 star resorts)

    Elviria

    Car or taxi

Best for: All-inclusive family resorts, group trips, kids' clubs

10 km east of Marbella, dominated by all-inclusive resorts (Iberostar Don Carlos, Vincci Estrella del Mar, Princesa Playa). Big pools, kids' clubs, sport facilities. Self-contained — you can spend a week without leaving the property. Trade-off: when you DO leave, everything is 15+ minutes by taxi. Strong choice for tour-operator package holidays.

    Price range: €100–€350 / night (3–4 star all-inclusive)

Which type of traveler are you?

    Couple, first time in Marbella

Casco Antiguo. Walk to dinner, walk to the beach, sit on Plaza de los Naranjos with a wine at 22:00. You'll see more of Marbella in 3 days than tourists in Puerto Banús see in a week.

    Family with kids, 1 week+

Nueva Andalucía apartment OR Las Chapas all-inclusive. Nueva Andalucía if you want self-catering + Saturday market shopping. Las Chapas if you want zero meal planning + kids' club.

    Luxury, special occasion

Marbella Club or Puente Romano on the Golden Mile. Both have direct beach access, the on-site restaurants are destinations themselves (Sea Grill, Dani García), and the service is calibrated for honeymoon-level expectations.

    Budget under €100/night

San Pedro de Alcántara, full stop. You get a walkable centre, a real beach, restaurants the locals actually eat at, and 30% to 50% off equivalent Marbella prices. Take the €1.30 bus to central Marbella for sightseeing days.

    Nightlife and party

Puerto Banús, but only July-August. Outside those two months the marina sleeps. Stay walking distance from Calle Ribera (where Olivia Valere, Pangea, and the late-night terraces live) so you don't pay €30 taxi rides at 4am.

    Beach focus, all-day swimming

Las Chapas or Cabopino. The eastern beaches (Playa Real de Zaragoza, Playa Cabopino) are wider and less developed than the Golden Mile, and the Artola dunes give you a 2 km nature walk between swims. Pack the umbrella.

    Golf, padel, sport

Nueva Andalucía. Four golf courses within 1 km of each other, half a dozen padel clubs, plus Club La Cala 20 minutes east if you want a full sport-week. Stay at one of the resort properties on the courses (Aloha, Las Brisas).

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

Is Puerto Banús a good area to stay?+

Only if you're there for the nightlife AND it's July or August — outside those months the marina is half-asleep. Otherwise stay in Casco Antiguo or on the Golden Mile and visit Puerto Banús for one evening. You'll spend €30 fewer on taxis and see more of actual Marbella.

How far is Marbella from Málaga airport?+

55 km / 45-60 minutes by car or transfer, depending on traffic. The N-340 motorway is the only route. Airport bus (line A or 200) takes 75-90 minutes for €8.55 — usable but slow. Private transfer costs €70-90 one-way. Taxi from inside the airport €85-105.

    Do I need a car in Marbella?+

Casco Antiguo and San Pedro: no, you can walk everywhere and bus to the rest. Golden Mile, Nueva Andalucía, Las Chapas, Elviria: yes, taxis add up fast at €15-25 per trip. If you're staying outside the centre for a week, a car saves money by day 3.

When is the cheapest time to book Marbella?+

November to mid-March, excluding Christmas/New Year and Semana Santa. Hotel rates drop 40-60% versus August. The weather is mild (15-20°C, occasional rain), most beach clubs are closed, but Casco Antiguo restaurants stay open and you'll have the city to yourself. May and October are the sweet spot for weather + price.
